WEEKEND 1

Friday - 8.30 pm prompt

Course Introduction. Explanation of scheme.
Talk and discussion - 'Equipment for Hill Walking'.
Check of candidates' equipment.
Talk and discussion - 'The Hill Walking Leaders Responsibilities'.
Briefing for Saturday.


Saturday
- 8.00 am Breakfast

9.00 am Depart for practical day in the hills. Navigation skills - dead reckoning, Naismiths rule, calculation of speed and distance, compass headings etc. Walking skills - dealing with scree, craggy areas and rough ground.

5.30 pm Return to base.

7.00 pm Evening meal.

8.00 pm Talk - 'Survival in the Hills'.
First Aid Kits.
Route Cards.
Briefing for Sunday.

Sunday - 8.00 am Breakfast.

9.00 am Depart for practical day in the hills. This session will cover accident procedures and simple improvised rescue techniques.

4.30 pm Return to base.

Tea and debrief. Issue of Bronze National Navigation Award


 

WEEKEND 2

Friday

8.30 pm Course introduction. Equipment check.
Talk and discussion - 'Weather and Forecasts'
Simple ways of teaching navigation.
Briefing for Saturday.

Saturday

8.00 am Breakfast.

9.00 am Depart for day in the hills. Ridge scrambling and associated problems. Navigation - Dead reckoning.

5.30 pm Return to base.

7.00 pm Evening meal.

8.00 pm Talk and discussion - 'Access and the Environment'.
Hypothermia and Exhaustion. At the conclusion of this talk candidates will be briefed and will take part in a short night navigation exercise. Briefing for Sunday.

Sunday

8.00 am Breakfast.

9.00 am Depart for day in the hills. Blind navigation techniques and group organisation and control skills. Practice bivouac.

4.30 pm Return to base.

Tea and debrief. Issue of Silver National Navigation Award.


 

WEEKEND 3

Friday 8.30 pm Course introduction. Equipment check.

Candidates work in groups and prepare route plan for Saturday.
Briefing for Saturday.

Saturday

8.00 am Breakfast.

9.00 am Depart for day in the hills. Hill walk as prepared. Part of this walk will be unaccompanied but through a check system. The candidates' performance will be monitored.

5.00 pm Return to base. Debrief.

7.00 pm Evening meal.

9.00 pm Talk and discussion - 'How to cope with an enforced bivouac'. Preparation for overnight exercise and bivouac.
Depart for overnight exercise. This will involve night navigation and will culminate in a bivouac on the fells.

Sunday

7.30 am Return to base for breakfast.

8.00 am Breakfast.

9.00 am Talk and preparation for search and simulated hill walking accident. Depart for location to deal with accident.

4.00 pm Return to base. Final tutorial with course tutor. Final discussion with Course Director.

4.30 pm Tea.
