THE BRITISH HILL WALKING LEADERS CERTIFICATE
has been operational since 1986 and during this time has established itself as a practical means of undertaking training and assessment in hill walking in summer conditions.

Many organisations use this scheme to train and assess leaders to fulfil their legal obligation with regard to Health and Safety requirements. 

The course system allows flexibility to undertake the initial sections purely for personal training and skills learning or alternatively to complete the whole scheme and take part in the final assessment. The choice is yours. There is no time limit and you should be guided by your course tutors.

The scheme now incorporates the NATIONAL NAVIGATION AWARDS at Bronze, Silver and Gold level. BHLC I includes the Bronze and so on. The opportunity to undertake the National Navigation Awards is presented at each stage of the leaders course. In practice most people who complete the final assessment on BHLC III will also complete the Gold award. This award is a National Award and is validated by the British Orienteering Federation.
